NEWS 13.02.2012 Contacted Ásgeir Páll S: 8981998. He is foreman of the rescue team Jökull on the east coast of Iceland. He is interested to get the data package if it land on north east highlands. His first guess for cost for this project is +- 100.000 per day for one car and two - three people. Of course the price depends a lot where it land, on glacier or near some roads on the highlands. For further information about it you may contact me: Bogi Kárason. The name of house guard in Höfðatorg is Albert S:6618467 He said it will be no problem if we want to drop something of the roof for testing. The height of building is 74 m. Contact him one day before we want to do the test. 12.02.2012 We got the information from KEF airport (GPS coordinates) from 12.00Z flight to day and I also runed the balloon track model. It's in alpha_theam / Data_from_KEF_launch folder in subverion. source:/Alpha_team/Data_from_KEF_launch/2012.02.10_1200Z_windlevels.txt 06/02/2012 *Got contact info on a guy who is a student at the engineering department at HÍ who did a simular project So if u have any questions related contact Halldor This it there website www.HABiceland.wordpress.com *We got offer from Seglagerðin Ægir for the release mechanism. Which is two fabrics under and over the balloon with two zip on the top fabric to release the balloon 94440kr with tax, 75251kr with out tax. We are looking for lower price. 03/02/2012 CCP want's to have the simmular setup as in the Toshiba space chair. We replace the chair with there displayed object. Keflavík Airport Weather Service On 31.1.2012 3 members of Alpha team went to Keflavik airport (KEF) to meet up with Torfi Karl Antonsson the head of the "National Weather Service":http://www.vedur.is/ (NWS) station at Keflavík airport. Torfi was sceptical at first but at the end of the visit he was quite excited about the idea and was eager to help. The ballooning activity at KEF as conducted by the NWS is twofold. 1. The first part is a high altitude weather test conducted twice daily with a small (350 gr.) balloon. There is a balloon release at 10:20 and 22:20. The balloon is filed with hydrogen gas in an automated process in a container out in the airfield. A "radiosonde":http://www.wikipedia.com/wiki/Radiosonde is attached to the balloon. The radiosonde records: * Barometric pressure * Wind speed * Wind direction * Temperature * Humidity * GPS coordinates The information is relayed via FM transmitter to a reciever at NWS. Before launch the rRadiosonde has to be primed. I.e. the reciever has to know about that radiosonde and know to recieve information. The radiosonde stops transmitting once it begins falling, it is single use and not retrieved. 2. The second part is high altitude "ozone":http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ozone measuring. This test is conducted upon request from an unknown institution in Germany. The balloon is filled with helium gas and is filled and released manually. The payload is anozone measuring device and a radiosonde contained in a styrofoam box measuring ca 250x250x400mm. If this equipment is retrieved it is possible to reuse it. Torfi sounded very willing to help. He sounded willing to provide us with radiosondes for a test flight (outdated models with lead acis batteries). He was willing to let us witness an ozone launch and possibly launch for us an extra balloon with a radiosonde and ballast. Launch sites We have decided on launching from the balloon from Reykjavík or Snæfellsnes. The places that we are applying authorization for in Reykjavík are the grassfield southeast of the RU building. The place on Snæfellsnes that we are applying authorization for is called Kálfárvellir. Gas selection Gas used for test flight will be Helium as decided by Joe and Ragnar at a meeting on 7.2.2012 h3. Balloon Filling There are two way of filling the ballon. With a regulator to bring down the pressure from the gas cylinder and without a regulator. The no-regulator approach is not recommended by "Edge of Space Science":http://www.eoss.org as it can damage the balloon. In looking for a regulator, we have only been able to come up with a small welding type regulator wich provides us with a maximum flow of about 35 l/m. This flow rate translates to a filling time of just under 4 hours for a 4kg payload (7 kg total load). Wich in outdoor conditions is unacceptable. I ("Kristján":mailto:kristjan.gerhard@gmail.com) have contacted a friend of mine who works for a company who, among other things, do methane dual fuel conversions. I asked him about our regulator voes and he said he has two types of regulators for methane. One type brings the pressure to about 8 bar and is not controllable. The other brings it to a pressure of 0 - 2.5 bar and is made by (or for) "bigas":http:/www.bigas.is . All the regulators on the page have a flow of 30 mc/h. I´m not sure what mc stands for but im guessing "meters cubed" or m ^3^ . He is busy tonight but he will send me information late tonight and contact me again tomorrow with more information. h3. Electronics The test flight will have the following electronics * -Camera - A GoPro HDHero2 has been purchased.- * GPS tracker - Currently the "Spot":http://www.findmespot.eu/en/ is the * -Altimeter - Being a recent addition not much research has been made into this. If launched from Keflavík Airport, the Weather Service can provide us with a radiosonde wich has this function. As well as high altitude GPS tracking up to the "cut down" point.- ** Appears that there are some low cost options- *** Zlog makes one that goes to 32000m http://www.hexpertsystems.com/products.html *** For higher, we would need to build something like this http://www.thefintels.com/aer/atom_altime *** Which uses this chip Honeywell ASDX http://datasheet.octopart.com/ASDX015A24R-Honeywell-datasheet-29814.pdf *** Sparkfun has a barameter similar to the Zlog, but needs a recorder. http://www.sparkfun.com/products/9694 *** OpenLog serial SD card datalogger - http://www.sparkfun.com/products/9530- A change on 8.2.2012 indicated that the test flight should be a dummy payload flight, with only a spot device for tracking and some ballast for simulation of the load. Possible *cheap* camera - http://www.amazon.com/Mini-Camera-MD80-microSD-card/dp/B002AN2JXQ for test flight. Allthough it does not record HD video it would suffice for the test flight. If this camera survives the test flight, the GoPro defineatly would. Balloon A 3000 gr. balloon will be used for the test flight as decided by Joe and Ragnar at a meeting on 7.2.2012 h3. Retrieval I contact "Landhelgisgæslan":http://www.lhg.is (Coast Guard) and asked them for help to retrive the sword after launch. They were willing to do that, but ongly if the other helicopter companys in Iceland were not intrested to do it, or do not have the equipment to do it, since the sword will maybe land on sea. The helicopter companys that i know are: -Vesturflug ehf(Blue West Helicopters) [Sigtryggur Kristófersson. Phone:8955656. e-mail: slk@bwh.is ] -Norðurflug [Páll Jónsson. Phone:5622500. e-mail: pall@norduflug.is] -Þyrluþjónustan [Eggert Akerlie. Phone:5616100. e-mail: eggert@helicopter.is] *If you know some other, please add it here above. -It is confirmed that these are the only helicopter companies in Iceland, CAA confirmed that to me through phonecall. LHG contact: Ásgrímur L. Ásgrímsson 545-214 & 860-2922 ___________________________ We have made a format that we sent to the helicopter companies and asked if they could do the retival. Now we are waiting for the answer. If all of the heli- companys refuse to do the job, we can contact the LHG and discuss how we are going to solve this mission. 2 of the heli-company's, Norðurflug and Blue West Helicopter have already contact me and re-send me the format that i sent them. Thera they say that they can't do the job. The 3rd heli-company(Blue West Helicopter) have not contact me bacause the contact at BWH is of office until 16 february. When the Blue West answer me, i am going to contact the LHG and talk about the project and how we are going to solve it. h2.
